สมาคมพันธุศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทย ดำเนินงานภายใต้วิสัยทัศน์ พันธุศาสตร์เพื่อการพัฒนาประเทศอย่างยั่งยืน โดยมีพันธกิจเป็นศูนย์รวมนักวิจัยและนักวิชาการ ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านพันธุศาสตร์และศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ให้ข้อมูลและข้อเสนอแนะ ในการนำพันธุศาสตร์มาใช้ในการพัฒนาประเทศ จัดกิจกรรมวิชาการเผยแพร่ความรู้และเทคโนโลยีด้านพันธุศาสตร์ รวมทั้งเผยแพร่ข้อมูลและความรู้ด้านพันธุศาสตร์แก่สังคม

สมาคมพันธุศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทย กำเนิดขึ้นจากการจัดสัมมนาวิชาการ เรื่อง “พันธุศาสตร์กับการพัฒนาประเทศ” ณ คณะแพทยศาสตร์ศิริราชพยาบาล โดยผู้เข้าสัมมนาได้ร่วมกันจัดตั้งชมรมพันธุศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทยขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ 1 ธันวาคม 2521 โดยมี ศ.พญ. คุณสุภา ณ นคร เป็นประธานชมรมท่านแรก หลังจากนั้นจึงมีการจัดตั้งสมาคมพันธุศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทยขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤศจิกายน 2527 โดย ผศ. พญ. อรศรี รมยะนันทน์ และจดทะเบียนเลขลำดับที่ จ. 2165 เมื่อวันที่ 29 พฤษภาคม 2528 โดยมี ศ.ดร. สุมินทร์ สมุทคุปติ์ เป็นนายกสมาคมฯ ท่านแรก สมาคมฯ เป็นสมาคมวิชาการ มีกิจกรรมหลักด้านวิชาการ คือ การจัดประชุมวิชาการสมาคมพันธุศาสตร์แห่งชาติทุกๆ 2 ปี ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2521 และได้เปลี่ยนเป็นการจัดประชุมระดับนานาชาติ ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2565 จนปัจจุบัน โดยมีมหาวิทยาลัยผลัดเปลี่ยนกันเป็นเจ้าภาพ นอกจากนี้ สมาคมฯ ยังจัดประชุมเผยแพร่ความรู้ทางวิชาการด้านพันธุศาสตร์ ในรูปแบบของสัมมนา เสวนา ประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการ รวมถึงจัดฝึกอบรมความรู้ด้านพันธุศาสตร์แก่ครูผู้สอนวิชาชีววิทยาในโรงเรียน สมาคมฯ ยังจัดพิมพ์หนังสือด้านพันธุศาสตร์และสาขาที่เกี่ยวข้อง และการจัดทำวารสารทางวิชาการ ปัจจุบันมีสมาชิกสมาคมฯ มากกว่า 700 คน ทั่วประเทศ สมาคมฯ ได้ขยายเครือข่ายความร่วมมือไปในระดับนานาชาติ โดยได้ลงนาม MoU กับ Genetics Society of Korea (GSK) เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2566 โดยนายกสมาคมฯ คนปัจจุบัน ศ.ดร. อรินทิพย์ ธรรมชัยพิเนต และมีมติเวียนกันเป็นเจ้าภาพในการจัดงาน Asian Genetics Consortium Conference (AGCC) โดยสมาคมพันธุศาสตร์ของประเทศ เกาหลี ญี่ปุ่น อินเดีย สิงคโปร์ และไทย เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2567

The Genetics Society of Thailand operates under the vision of “Genetics for Sustainable National Development.” Its mission is to serve as a hub for researchers and academics specializing in genetics and related sciences, providing information and recommendations on the application of genetics to national development. The Society organizes academic activities to disseminate knowledge and technology in genetics, and shares genetic knowledge and information with the public.

The Genetics Society of Thailand originated from an academic seminar titled “Genetics and National Development,” held at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Participants at the seminar jointly established the Genetics Club of Thailand on December 1, 1978, with Prof. Dr. Khunsupha Na Nakorn (M.D.) serving as its first president. Subsequently, the Genetics Society of Thailand was formally established on November 16, 1984, by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orasri Romyanan (M.D.), and was officially registered under registration number Jor. 2165 on May 29, 1985, with Prof. Dr. Sumin Samuthakupti as its first President.

The Society is an academic organization whose core activity is organizing the National Genetics Conference every two years since 1978. Since 2022, this conference has been elevated to an international level, with member universities rotating as hosts. In addition, the Society organizes seminars, panel discussions, and workshops to disseminate academic knowledge in genetics, and provides training in genetics for high school biology teachers. The Society also publishes books on genetics and related fields, as well as academic journals. It currently has more than 700 members nationwide.

The Society has expanded its international network of collaboration, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Genetics Society of Korea (GSK) in 2023 under the leadership of the current President, Prof. Dr. Arinthip Thamchaipenet. Member societies have also agreed to rotate hosting the Asian Genetics Consortium Conference (AGCC), with the genetics societies of Korea, Japan, India, Singapore, and Thailand jointly organizing the event in 2024.
